The Ohio Republican Party has asked a federal appeals court to stop same-day registering and voting that started today.
The GOP says the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati should either stop same-day voting because it could be vulnerable to fraud or segregate them from other ballots so they can be identified in case the registration is found to be faulty.
On Monday, U.S. district court in Cleveland and the Ohio Supreme Court upheld a directive of Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner that allows people to cast absentee ballots on the same day they registered.
The GOP also asked the appeals court to uphold another U.S. district court decision that allows for observers to be present at places where newly registered voters can cast vote-early ballots.
The court’s ruling overturned an earlier directive from Brunner that said state law does not allow for election observers in such cases.
Brunner, meanwhile, is asking the appeals court to overturn the district court decision on observers.
